The Rindermarkt in Lienz: Views from the Past

This first photographic exhibition dedicated to the Rindermarkt in Lienz approaches the subject from various angles. At its heart lie the prominent St. Michael’s Church and the longitudinal axis of Beda-Weber-Gasse, along with the streets, buildings, and shops immediately to its north and south. This area of Lienz—located north of the Isel River and notably spared from the devastating fire of 1609—stretches roughly from the former “Gasthof Glöcklturm” at the Pfarrbrücke bridge in the west to the “Gasthof Goldener Fisch” at the Spitalsbrücke bridge and Kärntner Straße.

What events unfolded at Michaelsplatz, around St. Michael’s Church, and indeed throughout the Rindermarkt area in times past? What moments were captured on camera? The exhibition presents a diverse and fascinating array of images: everyday street scenes; religious observances throughout the year; local businesses ranging from “Café Konditorei Gliber” and Blanka Achammer’s “Mini-Kaufhaus” to the “Konsum” cooperative; the mix of farmsteads and villas; the evolution of the Rindermarkt and its growing population as documented through neighborhood records and aerial photography; and the construction of new buildings alongside the partial disappearance of older structures and businesses.
