On the 50th anniversary of the opening of the main road Felbertauern, a new book is edited on behalf of the Felbertauernstraße Inc. The book illustrates the long, but finally successful, struggle for this essential north-south connection in the alps. The route Mittersill-Matrei in East Tyrol, opened for the traffic on 25 June 1967, can truly be called as the ‘vital line’ for the district Lienz and Pinzgau in Salzburg. In addition to that, also the nearest districts Kitzbühel and Kufstein in North Tyrol as well as ‘Spittal an der Drau’ in Carinthia have been made accessible for tourists and others. Therefore, at this time – the motorways of Brenner and Tauern have not yet existed - the new road was said to have a ‘European’ dimension.
